Module Description:To assess the purpose of research. To examine how social research impacts upon the Social Care profession and its client groups. To enable student to use quantitative research techniques to answer a research question if appropriate
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the importance and relevance of research to the field of Social Science.
LO2 Identify the various stages of the research process.
LO3 Assess ethical issues in research.
LO4 Design and conduct quantitative research from the planning stage to production of a final report.
LO5 Use SPSS to input and analyse data.

The role of research. Carrying out a literature review. Formulating a research question. Ethical considerations (informed consent).

Questionnaire Design, Construction, Piloting, Administration and Analysis. The types and qualities of sampling methods in quantitative methodology. (Probability and non-probability sampling methods). Variables and relationships between variables.

Basic Applications. Creating a data set. Assigning measurement levels to variables. Running Frequencies. Recoding Variables. Crosstabs. Extracting tables and charts including histograms. Running Cross-tabs and use of Multiple Response tables. Running Statistical Significance tests.
