Module Description:The aim of this module: Is to explain the importance, issues, and challenges involved in exploiting, manipulating and developing a knowledge-intensive and intelligent service Web with particular regard to the social semantic web; to develop a critical understanding of the issues involved in the elicitation and integration of information from pre-existing, independent sources, and from collective behaviours gleaned from social media platforms.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate a critical understanding of the principles of the Semantic Web, and to apply principles of ontology development to information integration problems for integrating both structured and semi-structured data, at the database and application levels.
LO2 Critically evaluate the principles and potential of linked data, and to be able to develop and deploy linked data applications.
LO3 Critically evaluate the infrastructure and dynamics of social networks and to assess these in the context of a variety of data analytic applications.
LO4 Critically analyse the techniques for extracting new information from web structure and content, and to apply these techniques to practical applications.

Continuous Assessment The following is an indication of the CA component of this module in terms of typical tasks and how they are assessed; CA1 Typical task: Research an emerging or proposed technique, methodology, or architecture applicable to a social media application, identifying positive aspects and deficiencies, and where appropriate to propose extensions/improvements.Task assessed in terms of: Critical evaluation and systematic understanding of the task, as evidenced in the report submitted; CA2 Typical task:To consider one of the existing enabling technologies for cooperating systems and to develop a solution to a current problem within its sphere, examples might include: information consistency and versioning in ontology development, determination of data mismatches in information integration; semantic mismatches in web mining etc.Task assessed in terms of: Quality and detail of proposed solution, and demonstration of critical understanding of problem, as evidenced in the report submitted. 1,2,3,4 50.00 n/a
