Module Description:This module will enable the student to understand and appreciate the concepts of a healthy lifestyle and various aspects of health promotion.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Provide a broad definition and description of health.
LO2 Provide a basic explanation of the functioning of a number of major body systems e.g. respiratory, circulatory, digestive.
LO3 List the evolution and principles of health promotion.
LO4 Describe and evaluate a number of health promotion initiatives based on case studies used in class.

What is health
Definitions of health, well-being and illness. Health beyond mere 'absense of disease'.
Health Promotion
The evolution of health promotion. Models and approaches to health promotion. The Ottowa Charter. Workplace health promotion. Case study: stress in the workplace. Promoting health with at risk groups.
Understanding health
The structure and functions of body systems e.g. circulatory, respiratory, digestive. Understanding some health problems associated with these systems. Understanding mental illness. Case studies on health promotion initiatives relative to each of the above.
