Module Description:Introduce students to key sociological concepts of socialization, stratification and culture. Evaluate how these key sociological concepts impact upon the role of social care practitioners and their clients. Provide students with an opportunity to critically reflect on their personal life experiences and values and to assess how these might impact upon their work with clients.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

LO2 Apply the principles of sociology to the discipline of Social Care
LO3 Analyse contemporary social and health issues using sociological tools and concepts.

Module Content & Assessment

Introduce a series of sociological concepts including: political, economic and social constructs, societal change, cultural values and beliefs, inequality, health status, life chances, ethnicity and demography.
Acquisition and reproduction of personality, culture, and social structure. Social construction of everyday life – emphasis on primary and secondary socialization. Focus on work,family, education and religion.
Causes of social class differences in Irish society. Varying structures of stratification. Consequences for the individual/ethnic groups/marginalized groups. Conditions under which mobility occurs. The importance of education and social mobility.
