Module Author:PAUL FARRELL
Module Description:The first aim of this course is to provide the student with further calculus based techniques so as to have completed a broad range of methods for the solution of engineering problems. A second aim of the module is to develop the student’s power of judgement in the selection of appropriate techniques for problem solving and the evaluation of results. Finally the module aims to complete the process of putting in place a firm mathematical foundation for future development of the student.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Perform basic calculations involving summation notation and complex numbers.
LO2 Calculate real and complex Fourier coefficients.
LO3 Calculate Fourier series for even or odd engineering functions.
LO4 Calculate Fourier Transforms and inverse Fourier Transforms from definitions and tables.
LO5 Calculate amplitude and phase spectra of engineering functions.
LO6 Construct transfer functions of simple engineering systems using Fourier transform techniques.
LO7 Calculate z-transforms using a standard table, linearity, and shift theorems.
LO8 Solve first and second order linear difference equations using z-transforms.

Module Content & Assessment

Course Work
Assessment Type Assessment Description Outcome addressed % of total Assessment Date
Continuous Assessment Midterm Test 1,4,5,6 15.00 Week 7
Continuous Assessment Key Skills: Note: Key Skills tests examine material first seen in earlier semesters, but which carries over into this semester and is viewed as essential. The tests are run as quizzes in Moodle and have 15 questions each, most of which are multiple choice. The aim is to encourage real competence, so students receive none of the available 15% until they reach the threshold of 10 correct answers on a test. Students receive 6%, 7%, 9%, 10%, or 15% respectively for 10, 11, 12, 13, or 14/15 correct answers. Given the nature of the marking scheme, students are allowed to repeat the test several times during the semester. 1 15.00 Week 12
