Module Description:Students are required to undertake an individual project within the area of automation engineering. This involves working independently, under supervision, to identify an automation problem and prepare a detailed project proposal document for its solution.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Develop, manage and document a defined project using a self-driven process to meet objectives, practising effective one to one progress reporting and negotiation of deliverables.
LO2 Apply research, investigatory, problem solving, decision making and analytical skills to critically evaluate an automation problem and propose a solution.
LO3 Use project planning methodology appropriate to the project.
LO4 Research, evaluate, reference and apply information from a variety of sources.
LO5 Apply the principles of experimental design.
LO6 Apply ICT tools as relevant.
LO7 Work safely and ethically in an engineering environment and apply codes of practice and regulations where relevant.
LO8 Present the project (oral and written), to include rationale, literature research, proposed methodology, testing and analysis with information and arguments set out in a coherent, logical sequence. Support conclusions with fact, engineering judgement and interpretation.

Project Scope and Literature Research
Strategies for identifying a research problem. Requirements gathering. Define problem statement. Formulate questions for literature research, Identify and use a variety of techniques to obtain information (including standard research and electronic retrieval methods). Investigate codes of practice. legislation, regulations as appropriate.

Project Planning/Management
Formulate, implement and review a plan of action. Work consistently to plan, modifying, and adapting where necessary and completing to deadline. Record activities in a log book.

Formulate a technical report
Formulate a detailed project proposal to include literature research, proposed methodology, test plan, design of experiments and analysis. Make a coherent argument and defend decisions, with particular reference to ethics where relevant.
