Module Description:This module expands on the material in Medical Device Design 1 by taking a systems approach to design. It will equip students with a knowledge of the physiology and features of a range of medical devices and instruments. The modules has a particular emphasis on the development of medical devices using a Model Based Design approach. Practical implementation of designs will apply the Physical Network Approach within a computerised development environment. This will entail utilisation of pre-defined elements, or modification of the attributes of predefined elements, or the creation of new elements. The models will typically span multiple domains such as electrical, fluid, thermal and mechanical.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Distinguish between medical devices and medical instruments, identifying the clinical need, issues of patient and operator safety and relevant sensor technologies employed.
LO2 Explain the physiology, key features and relevant standards of a range of medical devices and instruments such as Electrocardiographs, Pacemakers, Hemodialysis delivery systems etc.
LO3 Describe systems and sub-systems using functional flow block diagrams.
LO4 Explore the Model Based Design process and it's advantages and disadvantages.
LO5 Implement Model Based Design using a computerised Physical Network Approach.
