Module Description:This module aims to provide the student with: 1) A knowledge of the structure of mammalian and microbial cells and the bio-molecules they are made from. 2) The basics principles of microbiology, including organisms, growth and their importance to industry.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Compare and contrast the basic structures of prokayotic and eukaryotic cells, identifying key components and their functions.
LO2 Identify major biomolecules and their functions and describe simple spectrophotometric tests for the identification and quantification of biologically important molecules
LO3 Explain the basis for disinfection and sterilisation processes and how these are used in bio/pharmaceutical manufacturing
LO4 Perform and report results of simple laboratory techiques relating to aseptic technique, microbial isolation and identification, and simple microscopy
LO5 Explain how our knowledge of the cell and its operations is exploited in biotechnology
