Module Description:This module aims to provide the student with: An understanding of and competency in recombinant DNA technology, A knowledge of the basic concepts of mammalian cell culture; An understanding of the principles of protein isolation and purification, and the necessary skills to isolate and characterise proteins; An understanding of protein diseases and of the roles played by proteins in medicine; Theoretical aspects of this module are complemented by laboratory experiments delivered the Laboratory skills module running concurrently.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Design a cloning strategy with an appropriate vector and host system
LO2 Demonstrate a knowledge of the basic concepts of mammalian cell culture
LO3 Identify protein diseases and the roles played by proteins in medicine
LO4 Demonstrate a knowledge of the principles involved in protein purification, electrophoresis and analysis.
