Module Description:This module aims: • To introduce learners to the business environment and explain the basic concepts of organisation theory and design. • To describe the role of information systems in the organisation and introduce the student to the fundamentals of electronic business and electronic commerce.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Identify the major types of organisations and describe their characteristics and internal structures.
LO2 Explain the role of information systems in a business enterprise and describe how they support business operations and managerial decision-making
LO3 Identify and describe the main types of business applications supported by the Internet, intranets and extranets
LO4 Describe how electronic commerce applications provide significant business value to a company and its customers

Continuous Assessment CA1 – elapsed, group – Typical task:The assignment will require the team to set up a new company, appoint managers of different functions and describe the internal structure and business operations of the organisation. The role of information system in the enterprise will also be highlighted. Students will be required to take part in a class presentation followed by a question and answer session. The task will be assessed in terms of the level of knowledge demonstrated relating to the design of an organisation, its internal structures and the explanation of the role of information systems in a business enterprise.
