Module Description:This module provides the student with a knowledge of fundamental networking concepts and technologies, the OSI & TCP/IP models, the application, transport and network layers, IPv4 network addressing, the data link layer & ethernet technologies, the physical layer and media, planning & cabling a network and configuration & testing a network, along with the practical skills to design, implement and test small Local Area Networks.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the “network centric” world and the relevance of networking and communication applications in business and everyday life.
LO2 Explain network models such as OSI and TCP/IP and the process of data encapsulation
LO3 Describe the application, transport and network layers of the TCP/IP suite
LO4 Explain the data link layer and LAN access methods such as Ethernet and describe physical networks, LAN topologies and hardware devices
LO5 Plan, connect and configure a network with the appropriate cables and device interconnections and develop an addressing and testing scheme
LO6 Develop and test small networks (equipment and simulated), and explain basic network traffic using a protocol analyser
