Module Description:The purpose of this module is to facilitate the student in becoming competent in laboratory procedures relating to other modules studied in semester 5. Students will also learn how to research a scientific topic and write a literature review.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Select and perform appropriate methodology to solve analytical problems associated with biological samples.
LO2 Isolate and characterise common infectious organisms from the human body
LO3 Demonstrate how diseases are spread
LO4 Use immunological techniques in the diagnosis of infectious disease
LO5 Isolate and digest plasmid DNA and characterise digestion products
LO6 Carry out protein purification, electrophoresis and chromatography experiments
LO7 Apply the relevant skills to analyse and interpret experimental data obtained from different instruments and be able to effectively report findings
LO8 Plan and execute a practical investigation from problem recognition through to appraisal of results.
LO9 Research published scientific data and prepare a literature survey on a given topic.

Independent Learning Time Students will be expected to read practical manuals before class and to write up laboratory reports and study for practical exams in their own time. For the literature review project, students will be expected to carry out independent research in their own time. This is in addition to time spent in the lab and time spent with project supervisors and is the minimum expected. 6.00 Every Week 6.00
