Short Title:Laboratory Skills I
Full Title:Laboratory Skills I
Language of Instruction:English
Module Code:LSKI H1006

Credits: 5
Field of Study:Science
Module Delivered in 5 programme(s)
Reviewed By:JOHN BEHAN
Module Author:Darvree Downey
Module Description:This module develops fundamental practical skills across the experimental science disciplines. It is intrinsically linked to the theory covered in Biology 1, Chemistry 1 and Physics 1. It includes a component in Laboratory Practice and Procedure. Upon completion of this module the student should have the laboratory skills needed to set up and run experiments based on the related theory modules; collect and analyse raw data and work safely in the laboratory. The concepts of team-work and good laboratory practice will be emphasised throughout.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Explain the rationale for laboratory Health and Safety procedures and apply these procedures in the laboratory including the use of SDS information
LO2 Set up and run an experiment as described in a laboratory manaual based on correct interpretation of the principles of the experiment
LO3 Prepare solutions of the required concentration and perform all calculations related to solution preparation and dilution
LO4 Analyse and report experimental data using the correct format, terminology and units
LO5 Prepare laboratory reports in a specified format that discuss the experimental data obtained in the context of related theory.
LO6 Perform basic scientific analytical techniques that build on the theory learned in Chemistry 1, Biology 1 and Physics 1.
