Module Description:This module provides a foundation in four key areas of Physics - Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat & Temperature, and Waves. Upon successful completion of this module the student will also have an understanding of the role of physics in other scientific disciplines. The module also aims to develop an appreciation for the scope of these areas of specialisation, their application to their programme area of expertise and an awareness of current developments in these fields.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Discuss the seven fundamental quantities in nature and their associated SI units; the standardisation of units in general; scale as represented through orders of magnitude (powers of ten) and express scientific measurements and calculations in scientific notation.
LO2 Express measurements using scientific units, convert between scientific units.
LO3 Explain the principles of mechanics, properties of matter, heat and temperature and wave phenomena and be able to relate them to related disciplines within their course.
LO4 Solve numerical scientific problems using appropriate equations.
