Module Description:The aim of this module is to provide the student with the fundamentals of the application of spectroscopy and electrochemistry in DNA an Forensics. This module will cover the scope and theory of Ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, Atomic absorption spectroscopy, NMR Spectroscopy, Mass Spectroscopy and Electrochemical techniques. The module will be delivered with a strong emphasis on the applications of these analytical techniques in DNA and Forensics. Theoretical aspects of this module are underpinned by laboratory experiments from the Laboratory Skills for DNA and Forensics.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Perform analysis of simple organic/bioorganic molecules using spectroscopy and electrochemical techniques.
LO2 Utilise diagnostic skills in order to carry out basic trouble shooting
LO3 Utilise spectroscopic data to elucidate molecular structure
LO4 Discuss the theory underpinning spectroscopic techniques.
LO5 Describe the application of spectroscopic and analytical techniques
