Module Description:This module has been designed to give the student an understanding of forensic genetics from the collection of biological evidence, to the analysis, interpretation and presentation of the DNA evidence. Theoretical aspects of this module are complemented by laboratory experiments delivered in the ‘Laboratory skills in DNA and forensics’ module in this semester.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Collect, characterize and store biological evidence in an appropriate manner for DNA analysis
LO2 Extract, quantify and PCR amplify DNA to assess for PCR inhibitors and quality of DNA
LO3 Analyse, short tandem repeats (STRs), analyse and interpret STR profiles and present DNA evidence
LO4 Apply DNA profiling to kinship testing
LO5 Evaluate the use of lineage marker and SNPs to forensic genetics
