Module Description:This module builds on the brief introduction to curriculum presented in the first year, by examining a variety of national and international early years curricula approaches paying particular attention to the way in which curriculum permeates all organised activities undertaken in early years learning environments. This module particularly focuses on Aistear, the new curriculum framework for children from birth to six. Students will examine the principles and themes and the guidelines for good practice outlined in Aistear as well as focusing on workshops on the way in which this framework can be applied in practice settings. Students will build on their knowledge of curriculum through engaging with the issue of curriculum planning.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Identify various models of early years curricula
LO2 Recognise the way in which current trends and policies in early years education have impacted on curriculum development
LO3 Explain and apply Aistear the Early Years Curriculum Framework and describe ways in which the key principles, theories and best practice can be applied in work with children.
LO4 Demonstrate the ability to observe and evaluate children in a strengths-based approach.
LO5 Assess and engage in short and long-term child centred curricula planning to meet the needs and interests of children.
