Module Description:The aim of this module is to develop in the student a thorough understanding of the role of literacy and numeracy in early childhood care and education. This module will provide an extensive opportunity to investigate the main theories relevant to literacy and numeracy development in the early years. The module will introduce students to literacy and numeracy practice through play in an early year’s environment. The students will examine some Curriculum approaches to early literacy and numeracy and national and international initiatives to enhance early literacy and numeracy development
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Examine the main theoretical perspectives related to pedagogy in early literacy and numeracy development.
LO2 Illustrate the role of play and its importance in developing and promoting literacy and numeracy.
LO3 Identify the opportunities for early literacy and numeracy development and the role of the early year’s practitioner in promoting literacy and numeracy.
LO4 Evaluate the curriculum approaches in relation to literacy and numeracy including Aistear, the Early Years Curriculum Framework.
LO5 Plan for and facilitate a variety of play-based activities to enhance the early development of literacy and numeracy with young children.
