Module Description:The module builds on the students' basic knowledge (from Biology 2) of , proteins, carbohydrates and the analysis of biomolecules. The module provides an introduction to enzymology theory and applications, providing the knowledge required for biotechnology modules in later semesters. The study of integrated cell-mediated responses enables the student to understand and appreciate the integration of cellular functions in both normal and altered states. Examples of biopharmaceutical products are highlighted throughout the module.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Describe the structure of proteins and carbohydrates and explain the relationship between structure and function
LO2 Describe the basis and kinetics of enzyme activity and predict the effects of enzyme assay conditions on enzyme activity
LO3 Explain the principles and applications of a range of protein, enzyme and carbohydrate assays.
LO4 Explain and give examples of cell-cell communications systems
LO5 Describe selected metabolic pathways
LO6 Describe examples of commercially important biopharmaceuticals, their applications and production
