Module Description:The purpose of this module is to introduce students to the specialised area of Language Acquisition which builds on previous modules in Child Development. It covers theories and stages of first language acquisition and then goes on to consider how second language acquisition in the Early Years may be similar to but also different from first language acquisition. It aims to sensitise students to the difficulties faced by children whose first language is not English coming into a monolingual and mono-cultural context. The naĆonra or Irish language setting will also be studied. The module aims to highlight the benefits for children in becoming bilingual and bicultural.
