Module Description:The purpose of this module is to explore the question What is community. Theoretical perspectives on community will be discussed and critiqued. Different types of communities will be analysed and evaluated, including online communities. The role of community development and the impact on communities will be addressed. The role of community in challenging poverty, disadvantage and inequality will be examined drawing on theoretical concepts and frameworks.The content of the module will be updated on an ongoing basis to reflect new learning and development in this area. In order to progress, all components of module assessment must be passed by students – failure to successfully to complete any component will require repeat assessment/exam.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Critically analyse definitions of community
LO2 Discuss the importance of community within society
LO3 Evaluate the principles of community development
LO4 Examine the role of community education in Irish society
LO5 Appraise the role of the Social Care Worker in the community
