Module Description:This module builds on the module Understanding Second Language Acquisition and aims to give students skills for building second language competence in learners of English as an Additional Language. It explores the needs of different types of learners beginning to acquire language at different ages and stages, in both naturalistic and educational contexts. It also explores the varying needs of learners in terms of language for communicative purposes and language for engaging with schoolwork. It gives students insights into some of the features of the English language which can make it difficult to acquire and initiates the student into methodologies and approaches for facilitating language learning. Guidelines issued by the Department of Education and Science and recommended curricula and assessment tools will also be considered.
