Module Description:Module Aims: This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the practices involved in effective human resource management, with particular application to the accountancy profession, and to have a good knowledge of the law and best practice with regard to industrial relations.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:
LO1 Demonstrate a knowledge of the role played by the Human Resource Management function
LO2 Explain some of the basic techniques used in employment and personnel administration.
LO3 Describe the legislative requirements relating to health, safety and welfare in the workplace
LO4 Implement some of the basic techniques used in employee recruitment and selection.
LO5 Define the requirements for a positive industrial relations climate.

The Nature and Role of Human Resource Management: (12%)
Basic definitions of Human Resource Management; HRM in the context of Irish and European business; the history of HRM and Personnel Management; conceptual and actual differences between HRM and Personnel Management
Recruitment and Selection: (12%)
Drafting and analysing a CV; evaluating references and referees; different interview techniques; videoing interviews and analysing the output; role play in an interview context; the potential benefit of psychological tests in employee selection; administering psychological tests and analysing the output; basic statistical assumptions of psychological tests.
Employee Motivation & Work Design: (12%)
Brief overview of motivational theories; case studies examining the effectiveness of work design and employee motivation in an Irish and European context
Human Resource Development: (12%)
Mechanisms for performance appraisal of employees; importance of employee development and training- benefits to the employee and to the firm; means of developing management skills and potential; employee career management; reward management and recognising endeavour in the workplace; salaries and wage payment systems; conflict resolution.
Industrial Relations: (12%)
Techniques for ensuring a healthy industrial relations environment; the use of role play to convey the importance of effectively understanding the needs and aspirations of all sections of the workforce; transactional analysis and its value in enabling understanding of the skills and potential brought to the workplace by the workforce; discipline and dismissal.
Health, Safety & Welfare: (12%)
Health and Safety directives from the EU and required by Irish legislation; how to effectively establish mechanisms for monitoring Health and Safety issues in the workplace; the effect of technology on employees' welfare.
Employment and Personnel administration: (12%)
The legal framework governing employment; equality and maternity legislation; employment practices and procedures.
Conflict Resolution: (16%)
Techniques for defusing antagonism between employees; role playing to enable understanding of the possible reasons why conflict may arise; case studies for the theoretical examination of how real life industrial disputes could have been, and were avoided.
